Summary

This bachelor's thesis from Hochschule Rhein-Waal examined the effect of a six-week whole-body EMS training programme on people with a predominantly sedentary lifestyle who had experience of back pain. Twenty-five participants divided into an intervention group and a control group were enrolled. Changes in the frequency and intensity of back pain, muscle strength, spinal mobility, body composition and psychosocial factors were evaluated. The results showed a statistically significant reduction in the frequency of back pain, a reduction in stress levels and an improvement in subjectively perceived performance and overall wellbeing. At the same time, there was a reduction in body fat percentage. Conversely, no significant increase in muscle mass or muscle strength was demonstrated. The study offers interesting insights particularly for people with sedentary jobs, in whom back pain may be linked not only to the musculoskeletal system but also to psychosocial factors and lifestyle.
