Whole body-electromyostimulation effects on serum biomarkers, physical performances and fatigue in Parkinson’s patients: A randomized controlled trial

This randomised controlled trial evaluated the effects of whole-body electromyostimulation (WB-EMS) in patients with Parkinson's disease. Twenty-four patients aged approximately 72 were enrolled and allocated to three groups: low-frequency WB-EMS combined with aerobic training, high-frequency WB-EMS combined with strength training, and a control group without intervention. Participants completed 24 training sessions over 12 weeks. The research monitored changes in physical performance, fatigue and biological markers related to nervous system function. The best results were achieved by the group using low-frequency WB-EMS in combination with aerobic training. This group showed improvements in physical performance, balance, gait and coordination, and a reduction in fatigue. At the same time, favourable changes in some biological markers associated with nervous system function and the progression of Parkinson's disease were recorded. The authors described low-frequency WB-EMS as a safe and promising supplementary method of movement therapy in patients with Parkinson's disease.

The results suggest that WB-EMS can represent a suitable supplement to movement therapy in patients with Parkinson's disease. The study shows the potential of this technology for improving physical fitness, mobility and balance and reducing fatigue. At the same time, it suggests a possible positive effect on the biological processes related to nervous system function.
